About James Bruce

Having served for decades in the national and international security field, James Bruce is now an adjunct international and defense researcher for the RAND Corporation, where he analyzes classified and unclassified materials to inform governmental agencies on key issues. In addition, James Bruce teaches a variety of intelligence topics for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida Atlantic University. Mr. Bruce previously spent over 23 years with the CIA where he received numerous exceptional performance awards and the Director of Central Intelligence Galileo Award, culminating in the Career Intelligence Medal in 2005. He handled a wide range of responsibilities such as counterintelligence training, foreign intelligence analysis, and counterintelligence. Mr. Bruce also conducted congressional briefings and investigated the intelligence failure involving weapons of mass destruction in the Iraq War. Previously, he taught national security policy at the prestigious National War College in Washington, DC. Mr. Bruce began his postsecondary education with bachelor's and master’s degrees in political science at Kent State University. He then earned his Ph.D. in international relations at the Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. As a mid-career officer, Dr. Bruce participated in a senior seminar on intelligence at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. He has also taught at Georgetown, Columbia, American, and Kent State Universities. He has also made several media appearances, such as the Charlie Rose show on PBS and did interviews for The Economist, The Financial Times, Swedish Public Radio, and the official radio station of the Israeli Defenses forces. In his spare time, he enjoys golf and powerboating.
